The highly anticipated Monday Night Football game between the Buffalo Bills and Cincinnati Bengals was brought to a screeching halt after a terrifying medical incident involving Bills defensive back Damar Hamlin.

The NFL postponed the game between the two AFC powers after Hamlin suffered a sudden cardiac arrest. He remains in the University of Cincinnati hospital and is currently in critical condition.

Fans hammered the NFL for initially only stopping the game momentarily. But after nearly an hour-long break, the league eventually halted the game altogether.

While most of the focus remains on Hamlin and his health, there are many lingering questions about the game itself. The NFL is now less than two weeks away from the beginning of the playoffs. And both Cincy and Buffalo entered Monday’s game fighting for the top seed in the AFC.

The NFL released a statement on Tuesday clarifying some of the questions surrounding the contest. But they also left a number of them unanswered.

NFL Says It Won’t Resume Bills-Bengals Game This Week

With the playoffs fast approaching, the league had to address the potential rescheduling of the game. But now it appears it’s opted to kick the can down the road.

The NFL continues to be in regular contact with the medical team caring for Damar Hamlin, and also the Bills and Bengals organizations and the NFL Players Association.

After speaking with both teams and NFLPA leadership, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell informed the clubs today that the Bills-Bengals game will not be resumed this week.

The NFL has made no decision regarding the possible resumption of the game at a later date.

The league has not made any changes to the Week 18 regular season schedule.

We will continue to provide additional information as it becomes available.

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell also sent a memo to each team regarding Hamlin and a potential rescheduled game.

“No decision has been made regarding the possible resumption of the game at a later date and we have not announced any changes to this weekend’s schedule. We will promptly advise all clubs of any decisions that are made regarding these matters.”

It’s difficult to see how the league could reschedule the game at this point. Neither team is likely willing to risk having to play a playoff game on short rest if it resumes next week.

Now the question becomes whether it will result in a tie in the record books or a win for the Bengals, who led 7-3 at the time of the incident.
