Ole Miss’ Mac Brown Ripped The Punt Of The Year And It Will Make You Feel Things

Mac Brown Ole Miss Punt

Ole Miss football punter Mac Brown doesn’t see the field as often as many of his Division-I counterparts, but he makes the most of his opportunities. The sixth-year senior chose to come back for his additional year of eligibility (COVID waiver) this fall and put on a show against Tulane last night.

Early in the fourth quarter, Brown lined up at his own 28-yard-line. He proceeded to boot the ball away, sending a high, booming punt into opposing territory.

It was such banger that even the camera man lost sight momentarily. The punt, which was the best of the year across college football, bounced inside the five, bounced back away from the goal line around the 1-yard-line, and settled in at the 2-yard-line.

Illinois’ Blake Hayes had a great punt in Week 0, but he used the sideline. Brown didn’t need the coffin corner, he’s just that good.

Take a look, it was beautiful.

Brown, who prefers the traditional style of kick to the rugby kick, can flip fields with the best of them. He has an absolute cannon for a leg, but he is more precise than he is power.

But that isn’t to say he can’t smack ’em. Brown has two career-long punts of 65 yards and averages more than 40 yards per kick.

On Saturday, the Rebels got out to an early lead against the Green Wave and never looked back. Lane Kiffin and Jeff Lebby’s offense goes fast, scores a lot, and rarely kicks field goals or punts.

Kiffin and co. are big on analytics and, more often than not, the book says to go for it in 4th-and-short situations. That doesn’t bode well for Brown to see the field frequently, but that isn’t stopping him from building his highlight tape.

Ole Miss did not punt in the first half— and found the end zone on six of eight drives. It added points on the first three drives of the second half as well.

However, with two minutes remaining in the third quarter, Brown was called out to boot one. He sent a bomb toward the end zone, but the coverage team could not catch up to the ball and it rolled out for a touchback.

If the gunners had been just a little bit faster, it easily could have been recovered inside the 2-yard-line.

His second kick of the night was truly the best of the year, and he closed out the night with a 55-yarder.
