Rachaad White did not get injured doing the Ice Bucket Challenge
Rachaad White took part in the Ice Bucket Challenge in support of former NFL running back Chris Johnson earlier this week. He was mysteriously absent from practice in the days that followed.
Did he suffer a philanthropic injury? The Commanders did their part to debunk the viral claim with an update on his status.
It should pour cold water on the viral assertion.

Chris Johnson revealed his battle with ALS earlier this year. He was diagnosed in 2025 at age 39. The disease, which targets the nerve cells responsible for controlling voluntary muscles, has rapidly progressed over the last year.
Johnson currently uses a speech generating device to communicate. His physical abilities have been impacted drastically.
Since making his battle public, fans and players have flooded social media with support. Much has come in the form of the Ice Bucket Challenge.
A once viral trend has resurfaced as supporters push to raise awareness. The challenge previously made waves in 2014. The premise is simple.
Participants dump water over their head while challenging others to do the same within a 24-hour timeframe. Many of those challengers subsequently donate to the cause for ALS research.
That initial trend spread to 17 million participants, resulting in donations of $115 million across an eight-week span. In the US, alone, it’s reported that $135 million has been raised as a result of the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge.
The Commanders did their part this week. Players were seen dumping water on their heads in support of a great cause. White slipped due to the initial shock of the icy temperatures.

White missed practice.
The fifth year running back was absent from drills in the days that followed. Conspiracy theories quickly emerged. Was Rachaad White injured during the Ice Bucket Challenge?
The short answer is no. His team provided an update that rejects the social media speculation. The Commanders confirmed he tweaked his hamstring during a joint practice with the Dolphins.
Regarding #Commanders RB Rachaad White’s absence the last few days, he tweaked his hamstring in the joint practice with the #Dolphins. Worked out prior to Friday’s game. White was back on the field Thursday. His injury does not appear serious. He simply needed some rest before the start of the 2026 NFL season.

White has amassed more than 4,100 total yards as a rusher and receiver across his four-year pro career. A dangerous threat in the passing game, he’s scored nearly as many touchdowns through the air (11) as he has on the ground (14).
The ball carrier is gearing up for his first season with Washington. The Commanders signed him as a free agent after four years in Tampa Bay. He should provide an immediate safety net for quarterback Jayden Daniels.
By all accounts, he’ll be ready for Week 1. Rachaad White did not suffer an Ice Bucket Challenge injury. His practice absence was unrelated. We can all drop the online conspiracies and look ahead to the future.
