Robert Saleh Pays Zach Wilson The Most Ruthless Backhanded Compliment Imaginable

Stop us if you’ve heard this one before: Zach Wilson and the New York Jets put up a putrid offensive performance this week. Making matters worse for Gang Green, they did so under the national spotlight of Monday Night Football.

In a game against the league’s 32nd (last) ranked pass defense, the Jets weren’t able to score a single touchdown while Wilson completed 33 of 49 passes for 263 yards and zero touchdowns.

Wilson’s stat line is actually a bit misleading, in fact, as the yardage was padded in garbage time, he had multiple fumbles, took multiple sacks, and missed multiple key throws. In other words, he looked like the Zach Wilson we’ve all come to know.

Following the game, Wilson’s head coach Robert Saleh — whose face looks as though a ghost is threatening the lives of his family every time he watches Wilson play — paid his third-year QB perhaps the most back-handed compliment imaginable, saying that while it wasn’t his best game, it also wasn’t his worst.

“It’s one of those bizarre games. Every time we had momentum, just a self inflicted wound,” Saleh said. “Was it his best game? Obviously not. Was it his worst game? No, I’m not going to say it was even close to his worst game. The entire offense, obviously, we all could have been better.”

What’s strange about Saleh’s quote is that he used the word “bizarre” — which is defined as being “very strange or unusual” — considering that his Wilson-led offense has looked like this for three years straight now.

There’s also the undeniable fact that Saleh is ultimately culpable as well, as the Jets had eight penalties against the Chargers, many of which were drive killers. And that is the sign of an undisciplined football team, which falls on Saleh’s admittedly broad shoulders.

Now sitting at 4-4, the Jets will head to Las Vegas to take on the Raiders in Week 10.
