Despite his playing days being long over, it appears that Terrell Owens still can’t keep his name out of the headlines. However, this time around, it may not be his fault.
Owens has had a fascinating post-NFL career, spending time in the Fan Controlled Football League and blaming Tom Brady for his inability to get back in the NFL.
Many people may wonder why Owens, a Hall of Famer, doesn’t just take his money and ride off into the sunset, enjoying retirement in the process. But the answer may be that he doesn’t have nearly as much money as we think.
Terrell Owens Says Longtime Manager Heather Mesalem Took Money From Him
On Sunday, Owens posted a series of screenshots, accounting records, and text messages on Instagram related to former manager Heather Mesalam. Owens claims that Mesalem handled his business affairs for more than 15 years.
He also went on to call her “a liar and a thief” and stated that she is “no longer working for me in any capacity” after taking money from him.
“A PERSON CAN ONLY TAKE SO MUCH!” Owens wrote. “When you’re managing someone’s affairs and getting paid to do it, you have to be accountable for it!”
Owens then pointed out that Mesalem’s monthly management fee increased from $1,300 to $1,500 without his knowledge or approval. He also shared an alleged text message with Mesalem claiming that she had charged him more “Without my knowledge… that’s stealing.”
It’s not the first time the former superstar wideout has had trouble with those managing his money.
He’d previously discussed losing millions to financial advisors and representatives who he claimed mishandled his money. Owens specifically named former financial advisor Jeff Rubin and former agents Drew and Jason Rosenhaus as those responsible.
“I hate myself for letting this happen,” Owens told GQ of the previous matters. “I believed they had my back when they said, ‘You take care of the football, and we’ll do the rest.’”
According to the Instagram post, Owens retained the services of trial attorney Paul Aloise to help him transition away from Mesalam and address the situation legally.
