It’s not rare for tensions to flare during a high school sporting event, but you can usually rely on the adults overseeing things to make sure things stay under control. However, a softball coach in Texas landed in jail after she was accused of escalating a tussle that broke out after a close play at home plate by tackling a player on the opposing team.

High school sports may be fairly low stakes when you compare them to their college and professional counterparts, but anyone who’s devoted a good chunk of their teenage years to pursuing those pastimes is likely very aware there’s still plenty of passion and bad blood to be found at that level.

That’s especially true in situations where high schoolers have the chance to land a scholarship by standing out from the rest of the pack, but school pride is usually more than enough to spark some heated showdown between players and teams.

It’s a bit easier to stay above the fray when you’re an adult who has the kind of perspective the high school students who are playing on the biggest stage of their lives lack due to their age and experience, but there are still far too many cases where grown-ups who should know better end up at the center of some ugly incidents.

That includes the one that transpired during a high school softball game in Texas earlier this month where squads representing Mathis and Taft (two towns located outside of Corpus Christi) met on the latter’s field for the UIL 3A-District 29 championship game where the former walked away with an 8-5 win in extra innings.

However, the contest was marred by what unfolded after a Taft player was ruled out following a close play at home plate before exchanging words with the Mathis catcher who tagged her. A number of people rushed to intervene—including a Mathis coach who was seen tackling the Taft student she dragged to the ground.

According to KRIS, the coach in question was Briana Cruz, a Mathis alum who went on to play softball at Texas A&M International University before returning to her alma mater.

The outlet says Cruz was charged with assault causing bodily injury after the game and turned herself in before posting a $3,500 bond; another local outlet asserts the player was sent to the hospital along with her mother, who was purportedly injured after fighting the mom of the catcher who tagged her out.

The incident has caused a fair amount of uproar on social media, as Cruz has plenty of defenders who’ve argued she simply tripped while attempting to restrain the opposing player. Both schools say they are still investigating the situation, so we’ll have to wait and see how things play out.
