Fantasy football players can get very creative when they’re dreaming up ways to punish the person who finishes at the bottom of their league. That includes the ones who subjected one guy to a long day after he was forced to dress up like The Very Hungry Caterpillar and eat every food that appears in the book.
Most people head into fantasy football season with the primary goal of winning their league and securing the trophy, money, and/or bragging rights that come with reigning supreme when everything is said and done.
However, it can be difficult to keep every player engaged throughout the season (especially when they’re forced to accept that a championship isn’t in the cards), and many leagues have tried to actively combat that issue by instituting punishments that give participants some incentive not to finish in last place.
Some opt for classics like making a grown adult take the SAT in a room full of high schoolers, while others view the forms of retribution as a challenge that allows them to flex their creative muscles before every season.
I’ve come across a number of punishments that are designed to push someone’s stomach and sanity to the limit (like the Waffle House Challenge), and that was the case with the one inspired by a classic children’s book.
A guy had to dress up like The Very Hungry Caterpillar and eat every food in the book after losing his fantasy football league
It’s pretty hard to make it through your childhood without being exposed to The Very Hungry Caterpillar, the book that legendary children’s author and illustrator Eric Carle published in 1969.
The book revolves around, well, a very hungry caterpillar with an insatiable appetite that eventually turns into a butterfly after consuming the following foods:
- An apple
- Two pears
- Three plums
- Four strawberries
- Five oranges
- A piece of chocolate cake
- An ice cream cone
- A pickle
- A slice of Swiss cheese
- A slice of salami
- A lollipop
- A piece of cherry pie
- A sausage
- A cupcake
- A slice of watermelon
- A nice green leaf
All of those items were sourced for a challenge that a Chicago man named John was recently forced to endure after losing his fantasy football league, as his wife filmed him attempting to eat every single one while dressed up as the titular caterpillar.

That caterpillar ended up with a stomachache after making its way through the smorgasbord, and it looked like John also had one after he managed to make it all the way through.
