The Winter Olympics are officially open on February 4, 2022, but many of the athletes have been in Beijing for just over a week now. Part of the early arrival is preparation and part of it is prelims.

The former is currently the case on the ski hill.

This year’s Alpine Skiing events begin on Saturday, Feb. 5th with the Men’s Downhill event. The competition is taking place at the National Alpine Ski Center in Yanqing, which is roughly 45 miles northwest of Beijing.

It is an absolutely beautiful venue, but it is also very unknown.

There have not been any significant events contested at the venue ahead of the Winter Games. As a result, skiers do not know what to expect and have been getting a feel for the course throughout practice all week.

The Yanqing region does not get any natural snow, so the course is entirely man-made. While skiers often times prefer the icy, firm conditions, the gates on the course are the same color as the safety fencing and it is very blind from top to bottom.

To give the viewers at home a look at what it’s like to compete in the downhill events, NBC had a unique angle for its coverage. During the practice time this week, they sent a correspondent down the entire course with a camera strapped to the body.

It provided an insane POV angle of the course at 80 miles per hour. To make things even crazier, that speed is about 20 miles per hour less fast than the skiers during competition.

Take a look:

Fortunately the POV camera did not fall off. Unfortunately, someone else who was trying to cover the practices did not have the same luck.
