Wade Boggs was not really known as a power hitter during the illustrious MLB career that was worthy of a spot in the Baseball Hall of Fame. However, you have to wonder if that would have been the case if he’d been rocking the impressively muscular frame he recently showed off on a fishing trip.
Mike Schmidt is widely (and justifiably) regarded as the best third baseman in the history of Major League Baseball, but you can’t have a conversation about the guys who occupy the top tier of that position without mentioning Wade Boggs.
Boggs made his MLB debut with the Red Sox in 1982 to kick off a career that ultimately spanned 18 seasons (11 of which he spent in Boston before stints with the Yankees and Rays).
He was a 12-time All-Star (a dozen consecutive selections starting in 1985) who won the American League batting title five times and retired with a career batting average of .328 (the 38th-highest in the history of the league among eligible players). In 2005, he was immortalized in Cooperstown as a first-ballot Hall of Famer with 91.9% of the vote.
Boggs was not exactly the most imposing player when it came to his physical stature, and he was known for hitting for contact as opposed to power (he hung up his cleats with 3,010 hits, but only 118 of them were home runs).
However, he has certainly beefed up as he closes in on his 70th birthday.

Boggs got plenty of protein during his career, as he was nicknamed the “Chicken Man” because he downed some form of poultry before every single game. He also kept a fairly slim figure in spite of his borderline mythical drinking habits, as he supposedly downed 107 beers in a single day while guzzling dozens of them over the course of a cross-country flight.
Contrary to what the characters in the It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia episode his boozy exploits inspired were led to believe, Boggs is still very much alive, and earlier this year, he announced he’d been given a clean bill of health after overcoming the prostate cancer he was diagnosed with in 2024.
He celebrated his 68th birthday on June 15th, and it is safe to say he looks very good for his age based on the jacked physique the Florida native showed off in the picture he posted following a recent fishing excursion.

Plenty of people flocked to the comments to give Boggs props for his figure while voicing their surprise, including retired Orioles pitcher (and fellow Hall of Famer) Jim Palmer, who quipped there would have been “no complaints from the front office” about his lack of power if he’d looked like that back in the day.
