Washington Commanders Sale Appears To Be Coming Soon And A Familiar Name Leads The Way

While three quarters of the NFC East prepare to play in the NFC Divisional round playoff games this weekend, the Washington Commanders have other focuses.

Sure, the Commanders took a step forward in 2022 with an 8-8-1 record and only just missed out on the playoffs. But the organization still lacks a franchise quarterback and things remain a mess off the field.

The organization came under federal investigation for both its toxic workplace environment and financial improprieties. Around the same time, owner Daniel Snyder opted to put the team up for sale.

Congress members laid into both Snyder and the NFL following the completion of the allegation. And it appears those findings may well have moved along the sale process.

Washington Commanders Near Sale With Sixers Owner Josh Harris In Contention

JP Finlay of NBC Sports Washington reported late Monday night that a sale of the team could well be coming “soon.”

The sale of the Commanders “will be over soon” according to multiple sources speaking with NBC Sports Washington.T

How soon?

That’s unclear, and while the NFL might not want any major news stories during its playoffs, an announcement could come as soon as March.

Finlay also reported Philadelphia 76ers and New Jersey Devils owner Josh Harris may be the leading candidate at this point.

That leaves Josh Harris, a D.C. native and the owner of the Philadelphia 76ers and New Jersey Devils, as perhaps the top candidate to buy the Commanders.

In May, Pro Football Talk reported that a group led by Harris was prepared to pay $5 billion for the Denver Broncos, though the group chose not to enter into a bidding war against the eventual owners the Walton-Penner Group. That group had the backing of the Walmart fortune, and in turn, the Harris group decided to focus on the next potential NFL ownership opportunity.

But that’s not all. The report also states that the Commanders new owners could move the team from FedEx Field back to the city.

Further, among the remaining ownership candidates, there is a firm belief that a return to the RFK Stadium grounds in Washington is a real possibility. The Commanders currently play at FedEx Field in Landover, Md., and some ownership groups believe they could make a viable practice facility on the current stadium site and return to the city to play games.

Change is afoot in DC. And that’s probably good thing for Commanders fans.
