New York Jets owner Woody Johnson had a petulant response to being the only owner in the NFL to receive an ‘F’ grade on the NFLPA’s annual report card. Johnson has long been considered one of the worst owners in American professional sports.
Having purchased the New York Jets in the year 2000, Woody Johnson is now overseeing a 14-year-long playoff drought, which is the longest in the four major professional American sports leagues.
That, combined with the disastrous Aaron Rodgers experiment that unfolded over the previous two seasons, has put Johnson’s NFL reputation at perhaps its lowest point ever, as evidenced by his league-worst NFLPA grade.
“The report card paints a pretty damning picture, as Johnson’s ‘perceived willingness to invest in the facilities’ was rated the worst of any owner. He was also ranked dead last when it came to a question about their ability to ‘contribute to a positive team culture’ and ended up only behind Carolina’s David Tepper as far as being ‘committed to building a competitive team’ is concerned.” [via]
Asked about his F-rating at the NFL’s Owners Meetings this week, the 77-year-old billionaire — who has reportedly outsourced key decision making duties to his college-aged son — had a predictably petulant response as he denied the entire premise of him being so poorly-rated. According to Johnson, his first thought was that the grade was “bogus.”

“My first thought was it’s totally bogus.”
Added that he still wants to improve, and is always focused on improving, “but not because of this bogus report.” pic.twitter.com/DWYUuQ7bBR

Following their miserable 2024 season, the Jets once again cleared house and hired a new head coach and GM in Aaron Glenn and Darren Mougey, respectively, making them the eighth head coach and seventh general manager of Johnson’s tenure as owner.
