Younghoe Koo Inadvertently Saved A Kentucky Man’s Life With One Of The Worst Field Goal Attempts In NFL History

Last year, Giants kicker Younghoe Koo ended up at the center of one of the worst field goal attempts you’ll ever see with a botched kick against the Patriots. It was laughably bad to the point where many viewers literally cracked up after watching it unfold, including one man who discovered he had a brain tumor after it managed to trigger a seizure.

Prior to the rise of the internet, sports bloopers were responsible for a thriving industry fueled by people who compiled the best of the worst on VHS tapes and peddled them to the masses with the help of commercials where viewers were implored to buy them for $19.99 (plus shipping and handling) via check or money order.

Those prepackaged collections of lowlights were eventually made obsolete thanks to the online platforms that cut out the middleman, as fans now have instant access to clips they can replay until their hearts’ content.

If I’m ever in the mood for an instant pick-me-up, I like to take a look at the full sequence of events surrounding the infamous “Butt Fumble,” which is easily the hardest I’ve ever laughed while watching an NFL game.

Last season, the Patriots were also the beneficiaries of another blooper involving a team that plays at MetLife Stadium, as Giants kicker Younghoe Koo got nothing but turf during a field goal attempt against New England on Monday Night Football at the start of December.

That misstep really tickled the funny bone of one man, and he can credit Koo for saving his life thanks to the series of events it sparked.

The 152nd running of the Kentucky Derby will unfold at Churchill Downs this weekend. Further Ado is one of the 20 horses currently slated to race, and the thoroughbred that’s currently listed at 6-1 won’t have to travel too far from his home at Spendthrift Farm in Lexington.

According to the Associated Press, Mark Toothaker will be in attendance due to his role as the stallion manager at the farm in question, and he’ll be in better shape than he was at this point around five months ago thanks to a discovery that was made possible due to Hoo’s awful kick attempt.

The 59-year-old tuned into Monday Night Football on December 1st and was one of the millions of people who got to see that moment unfold on live television, and he devolved into a laughing fit after rewinding the play. However, things took a scary turn when his wife realized he was having a seizure, and he was rushed to the hospital before undergoing scans that detected a “tennis-ball-sized tumor on the left side of his brain.”

Toothaker was subsequently transferred into the care of doctors at the University of Kentucky, who successfully removed the tumor (which was thankfully benign) and gave him a clean bill of health when he was discharged the same week the procedure was performed.

He credits Koo (who was released by the Giants after a fairly disastrous stint and is currently a free agent) for triggering the seizure that unfolded in the relative safety of his home and sparking the discovery of the tumor he was previously unaware of. The eight-year NFL veteran also has an open invitation to be Toothaker’s guest at the Kentucky Derby, so I guess we’ll have to wait and see if he takes him up on it.
