On Wednesday we learned that Call of Duty will reportedly ditch the traditional single-player campaign and make a battle royale game a la Fortnite and PUBG in the upcoming Black Ops 4. Not to be left out of the current free-for-all last-man-standing craze, Battlefield V will reportedly also have a battle royale-style mode.

According to Venture Beat, EA’s DICE studio is currently working on a battle royale prototype that could compete with Fortnite and PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds. A source who wanted to remain anonymous said that DICE is currently working on a 100-player last-man-standing mode and they hope to have it in the upcoming Battlefield V. This makes perfect sense that EA would want to get into the battle royale phenomenon and reap the financial rewards before gamers are on to the next new thing. PUBG and Fortnite Battle Royale have been absolute monsters with the number of players they have and the money they are making.

“The studio has not yet approved its battle royale for release, and it is still in the prototype phase,” the report says. EA would certainly want to tease Battlefield V by the E3 2018 convention which is from June 12, 2018 to June 14, 2018. For reference, Battlefield 1 debuted on October 21, 2016, and Battlefield 4 had a release date of October 29, 2013. So DICE doesn’t have much time to add a completely new mode into their latest installment.

Two months ago, the first details about the new Battlefield video game leaked out. The game is set in World War II and will be released in 2018. The upcoming FPS is titled Battlefield V and not “Battlefield 5” because it is the fifth mainline Battlefield title and the “V” is for the victory sign that Winston Churchill would always flash during the war.
