Judd Apatow Says He Rejected Bryan Cranston For The Drug Dealer Role In ‘Pineapple Express’ Due To A False Perception Of Him

Breaking Bad/AMC

Yesterday, to honor the 10th anniversary of stoner classic Pineapple Express, Seth Rogen tweeted out a thread of hilarious behind-the-scenes movie trivia. The thread included things like injuries while filming, the Los Angeles Fire Department shutting down their billboard, and Danny McBride’s character being so funny they changed the script for him.

The thread led to a revelation by producer Judd Apatow, who claimed that Bryan Cranston auditioned and for the drug dealer part but was passed over for a very ironic reason in hindsight.

The drug dealer role Cranston auditioned for ultimately went to Gary Cole.

Try to imagine literally anyone else than Bryan Cranston playing Walter White in Breaking Bad. Imagine, like, John Stamos playing the role. My head just exploded. Apatow is totally right–Cranston likely would have never been considered for the Breaking Bad role if he was cast as the drug dealer in Pineapple Express and who knows how one of the greatest shows in history would have been affected by losing one of the greatest acting performances in recent memory.

Life is just one big clusterfuck of circumstance.

The anti-drug people gave him a $50 savings bond for his brave contribution to crime-fighting, and upon the bond’s maturity 10 years later, he used it to buy his very first bag of marijuana.
