At Comic-Con this weekend, Marvel Studios finally unveiled their Phase 4 slate and BOY was it a doozy.

Kicking off with Black Widow next May, Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe will consist of both new properties — such as Shang-Chi — and sequels — such as Doctor Strange: In The Multiverse Of Madness.

Speaking of Doctor Strange: In The Multiverse Of Madness, director Scott Derrickson — who also helmed Doctor Strange — said that the sequel will be the first “scary” film in the MCU.

“We are going to make the first scary MCU film,” Derrickson said during the presentation.

And while a “scary” MCU film is definitely an exciting prospect, according to Avengers: Endgame directors Joe and Anthony Russo, Endgame itself almost waded into horror territory.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, the Russo Brothers said that they originally planned for Thanos to … DECAPITATE Captain America in the third act of Avengers: Endgame. Uhhhhh… okay?!

“We clung to that story line for so long just for that moment of Thanos walking through a portal and dropping Captain America’s severed head,” Anthony Russo told Entertainment Weekly.

“We had most of the script working except for the third act, because Anthony and I were clinging to this concept that we wanted Thanos to walk up to the Avengers and throw Captain America’s head on the ground. We couldn’t give up on it, and finally we said, ‘All right, what if we don’t do that, can we find another way into the third act?’ And that’s when it turned into what it is now,” Joe Russo said.

I mean… damn. While I certainly noticed that the Thanos we see in Endgame is far scarier than the version we get in Infinity War, mulling over the idea that he straight-up takes the head off of Captain America is super, super dark, even for an intergalactic sociopath.
