The Foo Fighters returned to the Reading and Leeds Festivals and they definitely put on unforgettable shows. While headlining the huge UK festivals, the Foo Fighters rickrolled the entire crowd, paid tribute to late Prodigy singer Keith Flint, had Freddie Mercury make a surprise appearance and Dave Grohl’s daughter sang one of the band’s classic songs.

Grohl set up the crowd at the Reading Festival to think that the Foo Fighters were going to play a Nirvana song, something they very rarely do. “Some of you may know that the Reading Festival holds a very special place in my heart,” Grohl told the audience. “This is the first big festival I ever played in my life when I was 22 in 1991. It was a long time ago.”

“I thought tonight we’ll do something special for you that pays tribute to a song that brings us way back in time,” he continued. “It’s maybe the reason why I’m here tonight headlining the main stage. If you know it you can bounce around to it.”

The Foo Fighters starting playing a Nirvana riff and then none other than Rick Astley himself walked onstage and sang his 1987 hit song turned internet meme Never Gonna Give You Up. The ultimate rickroll.

Also during their Reading Festival set, Foo Fighters dedicated a performance of their song Run to late Prodigy singer Keith Flint who died in March. “Let me tell you something. I remember playing here with the Prodigy, 2009. That was the craziest shit I’ve ever seen,” Grohl said of the Firestarter and Breathe singer.

During the Foo Fighters’ seventh Leeds Festival appearance, the band had a special guest — Freddie Mercury. Sorta. Grohl invited a crowd member dressed as Freddie Mercury on stage to help with the band’s performance of the Queen classic Under Pressure, which was sung by Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins.

In other Foo Fighters concert news, Grohl’s daughter Violet appeared with her dad’s band. On Friday at the Leeds Festival, Violet sang My Hero along with her father as well as the spirited crowd.

“This has been a special trip for me because on this trip we have a new Foo Fighter in the band with us,” Grohl told the crowd. “Let me tell you something—she is the best fucking singer I know. Ladies and gentlemen, the best singer in the Grohl family: Miss Violet Grohl right now, right here.”

Dave then talks about touring with his daughter. “I’ll tell you what it’s like to be on tour with your daughter,” the Foo Fighter frontman said. “You stay up all night long watching horror movies and ordering room service. And then I get up, and I gotta make sure that she’s in the lobby on time. I gotta make sure that she gets breakfast and then she comes out and gets to sing to 60,000 people. THAT’S what it’s like being Violet Grohl tonight.”

This isn’t the first time that Violet has sung with her rock music dad. Dave and Violet performed Adele’s When We Were Young and Queen’s We Will Rock You last year.

The Foo also played an energetic cover of AC/DC’s Let There Be Rock.
