I’ve lost track of the number of times when I’ve been absentmindedly scrolling through my cable guide before stumbling across Goodfellas or Casino and deciding to spend the next three hours watching a heavily-censored and commercial-filled version of a movie I’ve already seen a dozen times. Martin Scorsese might have perfected at of the mob movie, but I’m an absolute sucker for basically any film or television show that balances scenes filled with extreme violence with ones of characters sitting around a table eating Sunday dinner.

As a result, I was very intrigued when I heard John Travolta would be playing John Gotti in Gotti, a biopic about the infamous mobster who once resided in the same prison Martin Shkreli found himself in last year while awaiting trial on some slightly less serious charges. Gotti found himself on the top of the pile after a power struggle to become the king of the New York mob and eventually found himself in charge of the largest crime syndicate in the world.

If you’re not familiar with the story of the Teflon Don, the Bronx native rose through the ranks of the Gambino crime family before taking control in the 1980s, facing plenty of resistance from both law enforcement and his fellow mobsters along the way before his ultimate downfall thanks to his eventual downfall at the hands of an associate-turned-informant.

Gotti was scheduled to be released last year before being pushed back to this summer and based on its most recent trailer, it might be worth the wait.

Travolta might not have transformed as much as Tom Hardy did for his upcoming film about Al Capone, but based on the trailer, I’m already sold.
