The town of Great Falls, Montana got completely blanketed in mountains of tumbleweeds that were blown into homes after some heavy wind gusts blew through the area and the resulting footage is incredible.

Apologies to anyone out there who takes offense to me calling it a ‘town.’ Great Falls is, in fact, home to the third largest population in Montana with just over 60K residents putting it between Bozeman and Missoula on the list and about half the size of Billings. But let’s be honest here, 60,000 residents is a ‘town’ pretty much everywhere outside of Montana and calling it a ‘city’ just doesn’t feel right.

Now that I’ve gotten that off my chest, let’s check out what it looks like when Great, Falls Montana gets hit with heavy wind that dumps thousands and thousands of tumbleweeds into town and the only obstacles to stop them are homes so those tumbleweeds pile up like mountains. This video has gone viral on TikTok and is approaching 1 million views in under 24 hours:

Local news station KRTV sent a crew out to speak with locals in front of their homes that had been enveloped in the weeds. One woman can be seen standing in front of a house with so many tumbleweeds stacked up that you can barely see the roof of the home.

The National Weather Service for Great Falls shared similar images of homes being covered after the heavy wind gusts blew through:

One fascinating thing, in my humble opinion, about tumbleweeds is that they can form from 10 different plant groups. It’s not just one plant that serves them up. Hence why they can be found throughout most of the Western United States across all various types of biomes.

Perhaps it’s their constant inclusions in Western films from old Hollywood but they really are part of the fabric of American landscape.
