A woman named LuLu Lotus from Mississauga, Ontario (next to Toronto) just whistled her way into the Guinness World Records book by setting a new world record for ‘loudest nose whistle.’

If you are wondering ‘what is a nose whistle?’ you are not alone. Most folks are just learning that such a thing exists and those same people are learning that there’s a Guinness World Record for it.

Lulu Lotus tells GWR she learned she could nose whistle at a very early age and “couldn’t resist the temptation to play pranks on teachers and classmates at school.” She also discovered that she was capable of creating “whimsical melodies” whistling through her nose.

Guinness World Records has certified her as having the ‘loudest nose whistle’ of anyone on earth. Her nose whistle was measured at a volume of 44.1 decibel(s) which they say is as loud as a birdcall.

For context, the loudest whistle ever recorded is 142 dB according to HyperWhistle. But that’s a physical whistle, not someone whistling with just their mouth. The loudest whistle (no hands) ever recorded by GWR is 117.4 dB.

If you’re like me and are wondering how deep this whistling rabbit hole goes the answer is yes, there are highly-competitive and prestigious whistling competitions. Last year the biggest event, the Masters of Musical Whistling International Festival and Competition (MMW), was held in Los Angeles over three days in September.

I can’t shake his feeling that we’ve all been wading through life without knowing there are people among us who can whistle through their noses and others who are grinding in on the competitive whistling circuit.

To me, something this far off the beaten path, is perfectly emblematic of the Guinness Book of World Records. The world records book was created (IMHO) for bizarre records like ‘loudest nose whistle’ and ‘longest mullet ever grown.’
