An Ohio man sent his Texas Roadhouse steak back twice for being too rare. But some folks thought it was cooked 'to perfection.'
A Columbus, Ohio, food reviewer gave up asking a Texas Roadhouse to prepare his steak properly. He settled on bringing his food back home to cook it the way he likes it.
Now steakhouses are expected to be proficient in expertly preparing at least one menu item. You can forgive a meat-centric restaurant for having a subpar macaroni and cheese, mushy corn, or undercooked asparagus. But if they’re consistently messing up the temperature of your beef, then that’s a problem.
Unfortunately for TikToker @614feast, that’s exactly what happened when he visited one of the popular chain’s locations.
“Texas Roadhouse sent me a rare steak. I sent it back,” he says.
Unfortunately, when the steak made it back to his table, it was still too red for his liking. “And then they did it again. Oh my God,” he says, zooming in on the steak, showing off its red inside. “Oh no. I honestly told them, ‘I’ll just cook it at the house.’ ‘Cause I couldn’t do it a third time, you know?”
Cooked To Perfection?
Viewers had varying opinions on whether or not his steaks were cooked properly. “Those both look cooked to perfection,” one said, remarking that they couldn’t find fault with the meals.
“Medium is hot pink. That’s hot pink,” another said, echoing the aforementioned steak assessment.
But there were others who argued that the steaks he received were definitely undercooked. “I just know it was cold in the middle,” one penned.
“As a medium rare girl that’s rare for sure,” another remarked.
Another argued, “That’s my definition of medium rare and I have a lot of gourmet chef friends that went to school for it.”
There have been instances of other Texas Roadhouse customers expressing distaste over how their steaks were cooked. One Reddit user uploaded a picture of their takeout steak order, which they thought could result in them getting sick due to its internal temperature. Someone who commented on their post said it looked like it had been cooked to be “raw/blue rare.”
Another Redditor, in a separate post, shared two pictures of their steak. The initial photo shows a brown exterior with dark black char lines. However, the second showed what the steak looked like after they cut into it. And the meat appears to be almost entirely raw, with uncooked white fat marbling in the middle.
Different Steak Temperatures
Steak aficionados will swear that cooking cuts of beef appropriately is an art form, and there are plenty of different ways to do it. Typically, restaurants will offer the following temperatures:
- Blue rare – 115 F
- Rare – 120 F
- Medium-rare – 130 F
- Medium – 140 F
- Medium-well – 150 F
- Well – 155 F
And depending on the cut of meat you opt for in a restaurant, some cooking temperatures are better suited for them than others. Steak lovers generally say that leaner cuts of meat lend themselves to lower cooking temperatures. So if you’re opting for a filet mignon and like your meat to be red or pink in the middle, you can ask for them to be rare or medium rare. Meat cuts that have more fat, like ribeyes, are recommended to be booked at medium rare or medium. However, personal preferences/digestive tracts play a large part in how someone enjoys their steak.
For instance, BroBible previously published an article on an influencer who loves eating her Ribeyes cooked black and blue. While some folks who replied to her video found the texture revolting, she begged to differ. And proved it by filming herself thoroughly enjoying the lightly cooked cuts of steak.
If you want to get your steak cooked perfectly, then poking a meat thermometer into your steak while cooking is prudent. Real Simple has a guide on the internal meat temperatures folks should be looking for while prepping steaks, along with poultry, pork, seafood, and lamb. Furthermore, the website states that ground beef should typically be cooked at higher temperatures than steak at 160 degrees.
Safe Meat-Eating Temperatures
The rarer a steak is, the higher the chance bacteria can rest on it. Searing these cuts of beef helps to kill any surface germs. So if you’re buying meat from a restaurant that sources its beef from reputable providers, they should be safe to eat. This is why it’s advisable to thoroughly cook ground beef. That’s because the grounding process exposes the beef to more bacteria that usually rest on the surface, throughout every crevice of the patty.
That being said, the USDA does have some stringent guidelines on the safest way to enjoy beef. The government agency states that steak cuts should be cooked to 145 degrees F to greatly minimize any threats of contamination.
@614feast Ordered my steak medium, sent it back rare, and somehow it came back rare AGAIN 😭 at that point I’m cooking it myself. Texas Roadhouse, what happened? @Texas Roadhouse
