A Texas woman claims that United Airlines’ “Express” flight is like “flying private for the poor.” It turns out, commenters generally agree with her.
TikToker Jeannette Stagg (@nxtdestination), a stylist who posts regular travel content on her page, said the carrier was “essentially private” in a video with over 628,000 views. She was taking off from the Houston airport, and she took the opportunity to film her walk from the jetway to the plane. The plane she was about to board was a small carrier that arguably looked like a private plane, proving her point.
However, when did United start offering shorter trips to regional areas, and why don’t more people know about them?
What Is A United Express Flight?
United Express is an alternative, small-scale regional brand owned and operated by United Airlines, which offers flights in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The brand has around seven hubs–Chicago, Denver, Houston, Los Angeles, Newark, San Francisco, and Washington–but it flies to almost every major airport in the U.S. It works with seven independent airlines to offer travelers regional connectivity.
United Express was created in 1985 in partnership with three regional carriers. The move helped boost these carriers, as they gained access to United’s booking reservation systems. It benefited United, as more individuals from regional airports had ways to connect to major hubs. Currently, there are around seven independent airlines that work with United to provide United Express to customers.
Is A United Express Flight Worth It?
Commenters shared a few insights into what United Express flights feel like. Generally, they were described as somewhat luxurious and quiet, especially when compared to other major airline travel. Planes like the Embraer E-175 have around 68 seats, which offer customers a snug but relatively comfortable experience. The fleet also has some smaller planes with even fewer passengers. Some planes offer single-seat rows, which can be comfortable for those who don’t want a seatmate.
“I flew a regional Delta a few days ago and it literally felt like a private jet,” one commenter said. “Small quiet airport, attentive flight attendants, spacious seats, etc.”
Viewers mentioned that the travel options are extensive, which makes it incredibly useful when trying to go from one smaller destination to a major hub or vice versa. There’s also a plethora of additional snacks that commenters described, which can make the experience better overall.
The only critiques of United Express, though, were that the flights can feel especially bumpy and that the space can feel limiting. United Express’ fleet consists of smaller planes, which can impact how customers feel turbulence. In addition, some of Stagg’s commenters mentioned that they would feel cramped when surrounded by other individuals.
@nxtdestination I mean it’s basically private 🤣 #unitedexpress #unitedairlines #houstonairport
