The Tampa Bay Rays had a bad night.

Not only were they shut out by the Angels on Tuesday, but they allowed rookie left-hander Reid Detmers to toss a complete game no-hitter in the process. The first-year starter entered the contest with an ERA of 5.32, but he saw a near-perfect performance in his latest start.

Only two Tampa hitters reached base. One came on a walk while the second was on a Los Angeles error.

To make things worse, LA racked up an absurd 18-hit night, seeing every single starter reach base. They jumped out to an 8-0 lead through three innings to knock starter Corey Kluber out of the game.

Things got worse before they got better, with the Rays going through six different arms over the course of the contest. With the game out of hand in the eighth frame, the Rays opted to save some pitching and turn to outfielder Brett Phillips for the last three outs.

It’s not the first time Phillips has made an appearance in relief. Earlier this season, the righty pitched against the A’s, and he was relatively impressive (up until he allowed a ninth-inning grand slam). Things didn’t go too smoothly for Phillips versus the Angels.

Anthony Rendon smacks a left-handed home run to show up Rays

First, Mike Trout took Phillips yard for his second home run of the game. Two batters later, Rendon stepped into the box with a runner on.

And if you’d been watching the entire game, it might’ve looked a bit off at first.

Rendon, a right-handed hitter, stepped into the left batter’s box. With Phillips essentially throwing batting practice from the mound, Rendon turned on a pitch down and in, sending it 411-feet to the right field bleachers.

The blast would’ve left 27 or the 30 MLB ballparks. He really got ahold of this one.

After the game, the MLB world was talking about the blast.

Rendon was 0 for 4 entering that final at-bat, and he was the only Angel not to have recorded a hit to that point. Maybe this left-handed swing will become part of the arsenal.
