Last season, the Dallas Wings had the worst record in the WNBA despite the emergence of superstar rookie Paige Bueckers.
That meant that the Wings again picked No. 1 in the 2026 NBA Draft, and they used the pick on another UConn star, shooting guard Azzi Fudd. Additionally, Dallas fired head coach Chris Koclanes, who lasted just one season with the team after facing immense scrutiny.
Unfortunately for the Wings, that hasn’t led to an immediate turnaround, and new head coach Jose Fernandez, who spent 25 seasons at the college level coaching the University of South Florida women’s team, has a hunch as to why.
Jose Fernandez Says Dallas Wings Players Need To Be Less Selfish
After a 90-86 loss to the Minnesota Lynx on Thursday night, which dropped Dallas to 1-2 early in the new season, Fernandez gave a scathing review of his team.
“It’s real talk, and it’s accountability. That’s what I told them,” Fernandez said of his postgame speech in the locker room.
Jose Fernandez said he told the team there’s selfishness in the locker room. Fernandez told them to not get upset about minutes played and lack of shots.

“I go, ‘There’s selfishness in this locker room.’ There is. You gotta look in the mirror and be accountable on how you play,” he continued. “And don’t get upset if you think that you should have played more, or you didn’t play enough, or you didn’t get the shots that you think you should have gotten.
“Really good teams, they don’t give a s— about that. You know what they give a s*** about? They give a s*** about winning, because that’s what matters.”
On one hand, it seems as if the Wings have a serious culture problem that they need to fix. And you know that Bueckers and Fudd, who played for legendary head coach Geno Auriemma at UConn, won’t mind a coach who is frank with them.
However, it will be interesting to see how the rest of the team responds to Fernandez coming in and telling it like it is almost immediately. It could well backfire, and Dallas could be in the market for yet another head coach by the end of the year.
