After a decade-long NFL career, a Super Bowl championship, and seven Pro Bowl appearances, Darrelle Revis has announced his retirement at age 33.

Revis announced his retirement on Wednesday via Instagram after getting drafted with the Jets’ 14th overall pick in 2007, becoming one of the all-time great cornerbacks, and earning himself one of the all-time nicknames: Revis Island.

The writing has been on the wall for Revis, who didn’t play last season until he was picked up by the Kansas City Chiefs in November, played just five games, and showed some tangible signs of apathy.

Revis joins a praise-worthy list of NFL vets who decided to hang it up this offseason–including Carson Palmer, DeMarco Murray, Joe Thomas, Nick Mangold, Jason Witten, Dwight Freeney, D’Angelo Hall, Vincent Jackson, and many more. You could field a playoff team with the lineup I just listed.

Revis finished his career with 494 tackles, 29 interceptions, six forced fumbles and two sacks–a stat line certainly worthy of a Hall of Fame bid.

Don’t worry about how Revis will earn a living post retirement–he is the only defensive back to take home more than $100 million in since his rookie season in 2007.

Matt’s love of writing was born during a sixth grade assembly when it was announced that his essay titled “Why Drugs Are Bad” had taken first prize in D.A.R.E.’s grade-wide contest. The anti-drug people gave him a $50 savings bond for his brave contribution to crime-fighting, and upon the bond’s maturity 10 years later, he used it to buy his very first bag of marijuana.
