The Georgia baseball team is one step closer to a national championship after winning its College World Series opener vs. Texas. The fanbase let the Longhorns hear it on Saturday night in Omaha.

The Bulldogs relied on small ball and pitching in that Game 1 win. It represented a stark contrast to its approach throughout the regular season.

Georgia leads the nation in home runs. The offense is lethal. The ballpark helps.

Georgia has one of the more hitter-friendly venues in the SEC. They’ve exploited that homefield advantage in the postseason, going a perfect 5-0 in Athens.

The Bulldogs averaged nearly 11 runs a game in those contests. They’d hit 25 homers in the NCAA Tournament.

The offense had to shift its approach at the plate in Omaha. Charles Schwab Stadium plays big. Georgia did not rely on the long ball. Instead, it took a page out of its opponent’s playbook.

Georgia dominated Texas.

The Longhorns play in a bigger ballpark than the Bulldogs. Their statistics and mindset reflect that.

Texas has the best pitching staff in the conference. It leads the SEC in ERA, home runs allowed, hits allowed, and opponent batting average. For comparison, Georgia’s staff ranks 13th in the SEC in ERA.

On the flip side, the Texas offense ranks 11th in homers, 10th in runs scored, and 11th in batting average. They’ve won 45 games on pitching, defense, and timely hitting.

Earlier this year, Jim Schlossnagle’s son was critical of SEC teams playing smaller ballparks. He ridiculed those that take advantage of “trampoline parks” to boost offensive numbers.

That made Saturday’s outcome all the more surprising. Texas should’ve felt at home in the pitcher-friendly confines of Charles Schwab Stadium. Instead, they were beaten soundly at their own game.

Georgia kicked the scoring off with a two-run homer in the first. From there, it found other ways to score while watching starting pitcher Joey Volchko dominate.

Volchko struck out 15 batters while allowing one run across nine innings. It was a career night.

Texas, meanwhile, struggled to execute. The Longhorns had three errors leading to five unearned runs. The Bulldogs scored seven runs on just five hits. It was far from the offensive juggernaut seen throughout the year, but they hit runners in when in position to score.

Georgia’s defense and pitching shined. The offense took advantage of extra opportunities. The home run was not a factor.

The Bulldogs trolled the Longhorns in Omaha.

Georgia has owned Texas in most every major men’s sport since the Longhorns transitioned into the SEC. They have become UT’s kryptonite.

The football team is 3-0 with an SEC Championship victory over the ‘Horns across the last two seasons. The basketball team is 2-1.

The baseball team continued that trend at the College World Series. Texas simply cannot beat the Bulldogs, particularly on the biggest stages.

The Longhorns could have an opportunity to reverse the curse should they battle out of the loser’s bracket. They’ll need to beat the Bulldogs at least once if they hope to reach the finals.

To this point, no Texas team has shown the ability to do so.
