Jerry Jones Says The Cowboys Haven’t Spoken To Urban Meyer About Coaching The Team But Didn’t Deny He’s In The Mix

The Cowboys are currently tied with the Eagles at the top of the NFC East following Philadelphia’s win over the Giants on Monday night, which would normally be pretty good news if it weren’t for the fact that the division is an absolute dumpster fire.

Both teams are currently sporting a 6-7 record with three games to go in a season that hasn’t gone as planned for either of them and Jerry Jones has made it very clear that he’s not satisfied with the current state of things in Dallas—especially when you consider the Cowboys have dropped three straight.

There are plenty of people you can blame for Dallas’ struggles but no one has caught more flack than head coach Jason Garrett, whose hot seat has become increasingly scorching in recent weeks thanks to Jones repeatedly putting him on blast following the last couple of losses.

Shortly after a report surfaced that suggested Garrett will have to win this year’s Super Bowl to keep his job, odds started to circulate concerning potential candidates to replace him that showed Urban Meyer—who previously said he’d come out of retirement if given the chance to helm the team—listed as the favorite.

Last week, Jones absolutely went off during a radio appearance following the Cowboys’ loss to the Bears, and soon after, we learned the team was seriously considering tapping Meyer as a replacement (although it’s doubtful they’ll make a change before the end of the season).

On Tuesday, Jones was asked about the rumors during his weekly appearance on 105.3 The Fan and denied he or anyone in the organization had already spoken to the former Ohio State coach despite a previous report his son Stephen (who serves as the executive vice president of the team) had a meeting with Meyer.

Here’s what he said during the exchange according to USA Today:

“That’s not correct. I can confirm that it is absolutely not correct. We have not met with any coach. We have not met with any coach, not met with any…

[I]n answering that question, I don’t want to imply that we wouldn’t in a way that would diminish the credibility of a player or somebody you’re asking about.

Normally when someone says ‘Have you met with such and such?’ ‘Are you interested in such and such?’ the implication is you’re not interested. That shouldn’t be brought forward either.

The facts are we just have not talked to any coach—potential coach—in the NFL.”

You don’t have to do too much reading between the lines there to figure out Jones is basically saying it’s only a matter of time until a conversation takes place assuming Garrett isn’t able to reverse course.

It is worth noting that earlier this week, Ian Rapoport said Garrett may only need to lead the Cowboys to the NFC Championship if he wants to avoid getting shitcanned.

However, given how things are looking right now, he’s going to need to stage a pretty dramatic turnaround to make that happen.
