The New York Jets showed some improvement this last season but very much still have quarterback problems.
It’s no secret the franchise is searching for an upgrade in that position. However, their latest coaching hire ties them to multiple options.
According to Ian Rapoport, the Jets made the questionable decision to hire former Tennessee Titans offensive coordinator Todd Downing. His new role in New York will be a passing game coordinator.
The #Jets are hiring former #Titans OC Todd Downing as their new passing game coordinator, sources say, adding a veteran assistant with extensive experience to join new OC Nathaniel Hackett. Robert Saleh continues to beef up his offensive staff.

Look, the Titans had one of the worst passing attacks in the league this last season. So, giving Downing that role is a bit of an odd decision for the Jets.
Regardless, he becomes another coach on the staff who has ties with veteran quarterbacks, per Rapoport. Here is the full list of quarterbacks on that list.
The #Jets not only helped their offensive staff but… can now be linked to another potentially available QB this offseason.
— Nathaniel Hackett = Aaron Rodgers
— Todd Downing = Ryan Tannehill + Derek Carr
— Robert Saleh = Jimmy Garoppolo https://t.co/N9HRTNH4hS— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) February 13, 2023
The most eye-popping option is Aaron Rodgers. New York is already reportedly in talks with the Green Bay Packers about a potential trade.
Even so, head coach Robert Saleh has experience working with Jimmy Garoppolo, while Todd Downing has a history with both Derek Carr and Ryan Tannehill.
Based on the recent moves to improve the coaching staff, the Jets’ strategy to improve the quarterback position might just be as clear as day.
Look for this franchise to be in continuous rumors throughout the offseason until they land a veteran quarterback via trade or free agency.
