When it comes to football, the old adage goes— if you don’t want an opposing team to run up the score, don’t let them.

A similar scenario played out on Sunday afternoon between the Ravens and the Broncos. Baltimore held a 23-7 lead over Denver in the closing seconds of the game and found themselves with the ball.

Instead of taking a knee, however, head coach Jim Harbaugh elected to run the ball. His team was four yards short of tying the Steelers’ streak of 43 consecutive games with 100+ rushing yards that was set from 1974 to 1977. He wanted the record.

With three seconds left, Lamar Jackson kept the ball around the corner and gained five yards. The Ravens tied the record.

Video from the opposite sideline showed a very upset Fangio, the head coach of Denver. He was FURIOUS.

If he didn’t want Baltimore to gain yardage, his defense should have stopped Jackson. Seems pretty simple.

Well, Fangio spoke with the media on Monday and expressed his frustration. He felt like Harbaugh should have had his team take a knee short of the record and end the ball game.

He thought it was “kind of bullshit” and he “expected it from them” because that’s “how they operate,” with “player safety coming second.”

What. A. Loser.

Harbaugh, who simply could not care less what Fangio had to say, put him in his place. He flipped the script right back on Denver.

The Broncos, facing a 16-point deficit, attempted to score a touchdown on their final drive of the game. With 10 seconds left, quarterback Drew Lock threw an interception at the Ravens’ five-yard-line.

To Harbaugh’s point, if player safety was such a big concern, why did Denver attempt to score there? He has “never seen a 16-point touchdown.”

In fact, he didn’t even expect to get the ball back. Harbaugh and his team knew of the record and prepared to fall short.

However, if they were to get the ball back, they wanted to go for it. And they did.

Fangio looks like such a giant dork here it’s not even funny. If I were a Broncos fan, I would want that man out as head coach immediately after hearing his comments.

If you don’t want the Ravens to get the record, stop them. Or, if you don’t want your players to get hurt during a blowout loss, don’t try to score against an insurmountable deficit with less than two minutes left in the game.
