Mike Leach is one of the most beloved figures in all of college football. The longtime head coach at places like Texas Tech, Washington State, and currently, Mississippi State, is known for being hilarious. He recently joked that his players’ descendants would lose their hands, is called a pirate, and once gave his thoughts about how all the mascots in the PAC-12 would do in a battle royale.

But, news broke on Sunday that Leach had been taken to the hospital for a serious health issue.

And, sadly, news since Sunday morning has not been good.

Mike Leach is fighting for his life

The coach, who is being treated at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, Mississippi, is not doing well. A writer for 247Sports that covers the Bulldogs, said this.

Steve Robertson, a 247Sports writer from the same MSU site, posted an update. It read, in part:

As far as Coach’s condition goes, I am told he is stable. That is not to say he’s doing well. He’s not. The family will have to make some difficult decisions in the days ahead and that could actually come to a head on Monday. I simply don’t know their feelings. My heart breaks for all involved. I do know that they need all of us. We must come together as a family in this difficult time. As concerned as we are about football, their entire lives are changing. We must be sensitive to that and support them all we can.

On Monday morning, The Clarion-Ledger provided more details after speaking with sources who said the 61-year-old suffered a heart attack in his home in Starkville. EMTs used a deliberator to resuscitate him after arriving on the scene, but the outlet reports there are concerns he suffered multiple seizures that could have possibly led to brain damage.

Shortly after that article was published, Mississippi State released an official statement addressing the ongoing situation.

I don’t want to read between the lines too much, but things seem dire for Mike Leach. College football won’t be the same without him, and I hope he makes a full recovery.
