After dropping his ongoing battle with the NCAA, former Texas Tech quarterback Brendan Sorsby has officially decided to throw his name into the 2026 NFL Supplemental Draft, which will take place on or before July 16th.
The supplemental draft does not take place each year. In fact, Sorsby’s entrance triggered the first one since 2023, which included wide receivers Malachi Wideman of Jackson State Milton Wright of Purdue, although neither were selected.
Unlike the typical NFL Draft, the Supplemental Draft involves teams bidding against one another using future draft picks in order to secure the rights to a player.
In this piece, we’re taking a look at which teams are the best fit for Sorsby, and could well try to land him.
NFL Supplemental Draft History
The first NFL Supplemental Draft took place in 1977, and there has been just 46 players selected all-time via the process. However, of those 46, eight became Pro Bowlers, while legendary wide receiver Cris Carter is the only Hall of Famer of the bunch.
While it’s unconventional, the Supplemental Draft can be a unique way to land talented players, and it’s almost certain that someone takes a swing on Sorsby.
The process involves teams bidding blindly against one another for Sorsby’s rights by submitting a round in which they are willing to draft him. If they end up drafting him, they will then forfeit that pick in the 2027 NFL Draft.
Like in the regular NFL Draft, teams with worse records get priority in the case of equal bids. These eight teams are the ones we’ve circled as potential landing spots for Sorsby.
8) Carolina Panthers

Sure, the Carolina Panthers took a step forward in 2025, winning the downright terrible NFC South with an 8-9 record. And yes, young quarterback Bryce Young did take a step forward under new head coach Dave Canales.
However, Young still struggled at times, throwing for just 188.2 yards per game, 23 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions.
Carolina picked up the former No. 1 pick’s fifth-year option, tying him to the franchise through 2027. But it won’t be long before they have to make a big decision about potentially paying him long-term, and drafting Sorsby could give them a fallback plan if Young doesn’t take another step in 2026.
7) Minnesota Vikings

The Minnesota Vikings’ future at the quarterback position is more than a little bit murky. After letting Sam Darnold walk in free agency a year ago, he went on to win a Super Bowl with the Seattle Seahawks.
Meanwhile, heir apparent J.J. McCarthy struggled mightily in his first real season after being selected in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft. Now, McCarthy finds himself in a battle with Arizona Cardinals castoff Kyler Murray, one that it seems Murray may be winning.
Sorsby would throw another wrench in the works in Minnesota, but he may also allow them to move off McCarthy is things are already beyond repair.
6) Miami Dolphins

The Miami Dolphins made an expensive gamble on free agent quarterback Malik Willis on the offseason, and while Willis may well have found his footing during his time as Jordan Love’s backup in Green Bay, there’s certainly no certainty that he has what it takes to be an NFL starter, let alone a good one.
Behind Willis, the Dolphins have former Texas star Quinn Ewers, whom they drafted in the seventh round of the 2025 NFL Draft and who appeared in three games a year ago.
But it’s clear the future is uncertain in Miami, and it might just be the perfect spot for Sorsby to walk into and compete for the starting job.
5) Indianapolis Colts

Yes, Daniel Jones looked like one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL for about six weeks at the beginning of the 2025 NFL season.
But then he tore his achilles. On top of that, he is still Daniel Jones.
Indianapolis certainly has some belief in Jones coming back and being the player he was for them pre-injury, considering they gave him a two-year, $88 million contract extension. And perhaps they’re correct.
But on the off chance that they’re wrong, and Jones turns back into a pumpkin, the Colts could do worse than having a promising young QB in Sorsby sitting behind him.
4) Atlanta Falcons

What if you took the Minnesota Vikings’ quarterback situation and moved it to Atlanta?
That’s about the best way to describe what the Falcons are dealing with now between Michael Penix Jr. and Tua Tagovailoa. Sure, Penix Jr. has shown more in 12 career starts than McCarthy has in Minnesota, but not by much.
Meanwhile, Tagovailoa comes over from Miami, hoping to revitalize a once-promising career. But if he couldn’t figure things out in Mike McDaniel’s offense with elite weapons, the chances of doing so with Atlanta seem slim.
Perhaps it’s time for the Falcons to pivot, with Sorsby providing an unexpected opportunity to do so.
3) Cleveland Browns

Deshaun Watson is old, injured, and seemingly no longer very good at football, on top of his…other issues.
Shedeur Sanders doesn’t look like he belongs in the NFL, and Dillon Gabriel just had his number stolen by Jared Verse.
So, you tell me, what exactly is the Cleveland Browns’ plan at quarterback? It appears that the plan involves being terrible, again, in 2026, and then drafting a quarterback in the first round in 2027.
But perhaps now they don’t have to? If Cleveland decides it likes Sorsby, it may be able to get its perceived QB of the future for less than what it expected?
2) New York Jets

If you had told New York Jets fans in 2013 that Geno Smith would be their quarterback in 2026, they’d probably ask you how many Super Bowls the team had won in that time frame.
The answer is zero. In fact, the Jets have not been to the playoffs in that time frame. Meanwhile, Smith, who is now 35, had the best years of his career in Seattle, and they appear to be behind him.
Head coach Aaron Glenn looked brutally out of his depth in his first season, but perhaps Sorsby could provide him and the Jets organization with a much-needed lifeline.
1) Arizona Cardinals

Having released Murray only years after giving him a gigantic contract extension, a move that many agree was the right decision, the Arizona Cardinals now find themselves in a contract standoff with 33-year-old career backup Jacoby Brissett.
So yeah, it’s safe to say things aren’t exactly going swimmingly in Arizona.
On a list full of teams with bad quarterback situations, the Cardinals seemingly have the worst. Sorsby isn’t guaranteed to fix that situation by any means, but why not take a chance? After all, it’s not like much else has worked for you since the days of Kurt Warner and Larry Fitzgerald.
