A couple of months before a certain global crisis forced Roger Goodell to trade the stage he was slated to grace during the 2020 NFL Draft in Las Vegas for the comfort of the man cave in his basement, the football world was temporarily fooled into thinking picks would hop aboard a boat that would ferry them into the middle of the fountains in front of the Bellagio to grab their jersey from the commissioner after having their name called.

That rumor garnered a ton of attention when it started to make the rounds before being debunked shortly after it began to circulate (the boat in question was reserved for a red carpet event that never came to fruition). While NFL fans may have been deprived of an awesome (albeit impractical) spectacle, it appears the NHL has drawn a bit of inspiration from the concept for an event of its own.

In a few days, the league’s best players will make the trek to Las Vegas ahead of Saturday’s All-Star Game, which will be preceded by the annual skills competition slated to kick off on Friday. As has been the case in the past, that event will feature guys trying to outdo each other by ripping the hardest shot and skating as fast as they can, but this iteration will feature a couple of fantastic new additions inspired by Sin City.

According to ESPN, five players will head out to Las Vegas Boulevard for “21 in ’22,” a variation on blackjack that will revolve around participants firing pucks at a board covered in different playing cards to amass the best hand in the fewest shots possible.

However, the real star of the show is the “Fountain Face-Off,” which will require eight competitors to climb aboard a vessel that will take them to a platform located at the center of the Bellagio Fountains and fire pucks at a number of targets placed in the water around them.

I can only hope the event will end with all of the participants longingly staring out at the show while the winner celebrates with a giant cigar and Claude Debussy plays in the background.

Even if that particular demand isn’t met, props where props are due to the NHL for giving the people what they want.
