The New England Patriots have struggled to keep quarterbacks healthy this year. First Mac Jones fell to a high ankle sprain, then Brian Hoyer went down with a concussion. For that reason, rookie Bailey Zappe has taken command of the offense and has played surprisingly well. So much so, that Bill Belichick is non-commital on who will be the starter with Jones returning soon.

Patriots HC Bill Belichick Refuses To Commit To Bailey Zappe Or Mac Jones

According to Zack Cox, Belichick is keeping the quarterback situation wide open. Jones is nearing a return from his injury, but due to Bailey’s emergence, the Patriots may continue relying on him. Bill Belichick states on the issue, “We’ll see how that process is. Mac still wasn’t able to play yesterday.”

To be fair, it’s not like Bill Belichick is known for giving out any information. The Patriots have been a tight-lipped organization since he’s been the head coach. Additionally, not committing to a quarterback keeps their Week 7 opponent on their toes. New England is set to face the Chicago Bears next and Belichick is going to take any advantage he can get.

Regardless, there is no denying how well Bailey Zappe has played. Especially considering he’s a late-round selection. Meanwhile, Mac Jones aims to return soon and could very well take over as the Patriots’ quarterback once again.

Keep a close eye on this situation. Although Jones has the upper hand as a former first-round pick, we can’t rule out the possibility of Belichick starting Zappe in Week 7. Especially considering the Patriots’ head coach launched Tom Brady’s career in a similar fashion.
