Pete Crow-Armstrong has played well since his vulgar exchange with a heckler.
Chicago Cubs outfielder Pete Crow-Armstrong has been on fire since mid-May. More specifically, since his graphic exchange with a hecklerĀ at Rate Field.
His performance has helped push the Cubs into playoff contention. Crow-Armstrong’s haters have supplied motivation for his midseason run.
Correlation is not causation. This heater could be purely coincidental. With that said, Crow-Armstrong boasts a large following of critics.
Some of the negative attention comes from on-field play. Some is the result of off-field antics. One particular incident went viral earlier this year during a series against the White Sox.
Pete Crow-Armstrong bashed a Chicago heckler.
The Cubs lost 9-8 in an extra inning thriller against their Southside rival on May 17. At one point, Crow-Armstrong got into it with a White Sox supporter.
The exchange can be seen HERE.
The interaction came after Crow-Armstrong failed to corral a deep fly ball at the wall. While sitting on the warning track, the fan yelled, “You suck!”
The outfielder responded in vulgar fashion. He later apologized for his actions, which were fined by the MLB. There’s no doubt the exchange was regrettable. His reaction was ugly. He seems to have turned a page in the days following the viral moment.
Crow-Armstrong was hitting .234 at the time of the argument. Since, he’s posted a batting average of .344 across 40 games with 14 home runs. It’s raised his mark for the season to .287.
PCA is an MVP candidate.
The latest odds show him as the second-best candidate behind overwhelming favorite Shohei Ohtani in the National League. He currently boasts 30/1 chances.
His rise at the sportsbooks has been fueled by a historic month-long run.
Pete Crow-Armstrong of the @Cubs is one of three players in MLB history to have a month with:
.375+ batting average
.775+ slugging pct
80+ total bases
15+ walks
10+ home runs
5+ stolen basesThe others are Babe Ruth (June 1920, July 1920, May 1930) and Lou Gehrig (June 1930). pic.twitter.com/ud5bAyf4wq

Pete Crow-Armstrong’s exchange with the Chicago fan was the lowlight of his season. He’s responded with highlights ever since.
The Cubs currently sit second in the National League Central as they look to make a playoff push. They have PCA to thank for providing an offensive spark.
We’ll see if he can keep it going following this month’s All-Star break and lead the team to the postseason.
