Daniel Terry and Ryan Browning swapped high school football programs in the state of Florida. These two highly-touted quarterbacks executed an unofficial 1-for-1 trade between two schools that are separated by less than 20 miles.
It is the perfect representation of this modern era of the sport.
There are more transfers in high school football than ever before. This latest move is one of the most unusual.
Daniel Terry and Ryan Browning swapped high school football programs.
It was first announced at the end of May that Daniel Terry transferred to Gaither High School for his junior season. He was one of the most productive quarterbacks in the state of Florida in 2025.
Terry threw for 2,578 yards and 23 touchdowns with eight interceptions in 2025 and ran for 364 yards and eight touchdowns on 95 carries. It was a really strong season for the sophomore, who is listed at 6-foot-3, 195 pounds.
Terry already holds eights scholarship offers in the recruiting Class of 2028. His current list of suitors includes App State, FIU, UConn, Liberty, Toledo, South Florida, Mississippi Valley State and Marshall.
This is where it gets interesting.
Incumbent starter Ryan Browning was still on the roster at Gaither when Terry announced his decision to transfer. Browning completed 103 passes for 1,883 yards and 21 touchdowns with only three interceptions in 2025. He went 10-2 as a sophomore.
Browning currently holds one scholarship offer from Rhode Island. Schools like UAB and Purdue have also shown interest.
Both Browning and Terry are proven starters for high school football in Florida. They were set to compete for the starting job at Gaither. The battle was going to take place during fall camp. The quarterback room was crowded.
Wiregrass Ranch and Tampa Gaither executed an unofficial trade.
There are very few rules or regulations for high school football in 2026. Players are, for the most part, able to transfer at will. A new law in Florida limits students to participating in sports at one school each year unless they meet certain exceptions. Those exceptions include military relocation, court-ordered custody changes or foster care placement. Athletes cannot school hop.
However, athletes are mostly free to transfer for any reason during the offseason. Unlike the state of Texas, there is not a rule that prevents an athlete from transferring for athletics. If an athlete’s family moves to a new residence that makes it necessary to attend a different school, the athlete can immediately join the new team. Although there are exceptions to every rule, generally speaking, any athlete is permitted to transfer one time without having to sit out a year.
Those rules (or lack thereof) allowed for the first unofficial trade in Florida high school football history.
Daniel Terry transferred from Wiregrass Ranch High School to Gaither High School in May, which left Wiregrass Ranch with a need at quarterback. In response to the high-profile move, which put him in an unexpected quarterback competition, Ryan Browning recently announced his decision to transfer from Gaither to Wiregrass Ranch.
Browning went from Gaither to Wiregrass Ranch after Terry went from Wiregrass Ranch to Gaither. The Bulls compete in Class 6A. The Cowboys compete in Class 5A. Browning moved down. Terry moved up.
