Former Manchester City star and current Atletico Madrid striker Sergio Aguero, a living legend in the world of soccer, just finished a deep run in the WSOP Event #84: $50,000 HIGH ROLLER No-Limit Hold’em tournament.

Before he returns to South Korea for Atletico Madrid’s preseason tour against K-League stars, Manchester City, and 2 La Liga clubs, Sergio Aguero headed to Las Vegas to test his mettle against poker’s best.

With the WSOP Main Event entering Day 8 on Friday, pretty much all of the biggest names in poker are out of the tournament and back competing in other WSOP events. One of the 2023 World Series of Poker‘s biggest draws are the High Roller events, and the $50K buy-in Event #84 is the final High Roller event of this year’s WSOP.

Sergio made it to Day 2 but busted after tanking for 5 minutes before making a call with all of his chips at play. He held K3 on a board of KhAd7s10d5h. His opponent flipped over A6 and Sergio’s Kings were no good.

Sergio Aguero was sent home with $88,506 for his very respectable 19th place finish. Aguero finished two spots ahead of 6-time WSOP Bracelet winner Jeremy Ausmus, 4-time WSOP bracelet winner David Peters, and 2-time WSOP bracelet winner Aleksejs Ponakovs.

And that’s just the players who made the money. Phil Hellmuth and Phil Ivey both busted out earlier in the day in 49th and 50th.

Sergio Aguero entered Day 2 of the WSOP High Roller $50K Event with the 21st biggest chip stack (880,000). He had nearly tripled his starting stack of 300,000 chips from Day 1.

You never know who you will run into at a WSOP table.

That said, nobody ever expects to sit down across the table from Sergio Aguero. He made $108 million just with Manchester City and has since played for FC Barcelona and is now with Atletico Madrid. There’s no telling how much money he’s made from endorsements.

Playing against someone like that presents interesting obstacles. It’s fair to say the ‘money doesn’t matter’ to them in a tournament and they’re out to win the bracelet and in it for the competition. That’s certainly a strength on their part but also one that can be manipulated in the right instances.

Thursday saw the 87th event of the 2023 WSOP begin. There are 95 tournaments in this year’s World Series of Poker with the last one beginning on Tuesday, July 18th.

Atletico Madrid’s first preseason tour match will take place on July 27th, so Sergio Aguero theoretically has a few days left to compete in WSOP events should he want to stick around Las Vegas a little longer.

Prior to the WSOP High Roller, Sergio Aguero made it to Day 2 of the Main Event with a stack of 237,000 chips according to PokerNews. He was then eliminated on Day 3 by the legendary Bill Klein who took part in this wild hand.

Or, it’s entirely plausible that Kun wants to head to Miami for some Publix grocery shopping with Argentinian teammate Lionel Messi.
