  • Tom Brady announced on Sunday that he was returning to the Bucs for a 23rd season.
  • Brady’s brief retirement lasted just 40 days.
  • According to a new report, Brady was actually considering going to the Miami Dolphins.

According to a new report from Ben Volin of the Boston Globe, seven-time Super Bowl champion and future Hall of Fame quarterback Tom Brady was planning on going to the Miami Dolphins prior to the lawsuit filed by the team’s former head coach Brian Flores.

Coincidentally enough, Brady officially announced his short-lived retirement and Flores’ lawsuit against the NFL became public on the same day: Tuesday, February 1.

“Brady was gonna go run the Dolphins, and then Brian Flores files his lawsuit and throws a wrench in the entire thing,” Boston Globe reporter Ben Volin said on WEEI radio this week. “Now all of a sudden you’re worried about cell phones and discovery and all this stuff, so Brady, they scrap those plans. So now Brady’s looking at it, ‘Well, what am I gonna do? Sit around on my couch for a year? No, I might as well go play football.’” [via WEEI]

Volin also stated that there was a plan for former Super Bowl-winning New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton to join him in the 305:

“Brady was not gonna go to Miami necessarily to be the quarterback. He was gonna be Derek Jeter,” Volin said. “He was gonna team up with Payton and run the Dolphins. He was gonna run the front office. It was gonna be [Dolphins owner] Stephen Ross’ big heist. You don’t need permission from the Bucs to get Brady to run your front office. And Sean Payton was gonna be his coach.”

Due to the lawsuit, though, Volin says that Brady’s calculations changed and that he instead decided to return to the Bucs to play for his 23rd season.

On Sunday, Brady announced that he was unretiring because he realized that his “place is still on the field and not in the stands.” His retirement lasted just 40 days.
