Urban Meyer sees a key advantage for his former team in its upcoming playoff matchup. Ohio State faces off against defending national champion Georgia on New Year’s Eve as both teams pursue a title.

Meyer, who coached the Buckeyes from 2012-2018, believes the program holds an edge at wideout and quarterback.

Here’s what he had to say while dissecting the upcoming bout.

“I think it’s a great matchup. I think our strength is receiver and quarterback room. Their strength is stopping the run, and they gave up a lot of pass yards against LSU, I saw.”

Meyer references the Bulldogs’ most recent matchup against the Tigers in the SEC Championship Game. In that blowout win, the defense did allow LSU passers to throw for more than 500 yards. Much of that came from backup quarterback Garrett Nussmeier who took over following an injury to starter Jayden Daniels.

Despite the yardage, Georgia walked away with a fairly easy 50-30 win. Meyer fails to mention that much of that production through the air was done in garbage time. UGA was up 35-7 before the halftime break. When looking back at the season as a whole, the Bulldogs surrendered just 215 passing yards per game.

Still, the former head coach is spot on with the talent that the Buckeyes boast at the skill positions. Ohio State averaged just under 500 yards a game during the regular season, and nearly 300 of that came via the pass. CJ Stroud was a Heisman candidate under center, and he’ll look to lead his team to an upset win over the SEC champs.

Many on social media were quick to comment on Urban Meyer’s Ohio State-Georgia analysis. Here’s what they had to say.

One person asked, “How many of those yards were in garbage time?” Another stated, “LSU was throwing the whole game,” noting that the Tigers were playing behind from the start.

The matchup should be the most entertaining of the CFP openers, with Michigan and TCU playing in the other playoff contest. The winner of this game will go on to play for a national title.

From Urban Meyer’s latest comments, it seems he believes Ohio State will give Georgia a run for their money.
