Wyndham Clark wanted to see a bigger crowd at Shinnecock Hills for the final round of the U.S. Open. He got his wish!

However, the vast majority of spectators were actively rooting against him.

Clark is one of the biggest villains in golf because of his temper-related outbursts and perception of arrogance. It did not help that he was partnered with one of the most well-liked athletes in the sport for his final 18 holes of the weekend.

The U.S. Open crowd was much larger on Sunday.

Course conditions aside, the most prominent storyline of the first three rounds of the U.S. Open had to do with the lack of fans on the course. Thursday was a wash because New York City was too busy celebrating its first NBA title in more than 50 years but neither Friday nor Saturday were well attended either. None of the four days sold out of tickets. It was a poor showing.

There were three main explanations for the small crowd and they all connected somewhere in the middle.

Wyndham Clark, the 54-hole leader, expressed his disappointment with the lack of attendance after his third round. He said it was actually distracting to see all of the patrons rush off to catch the last train back to Penn Station. He asked for more fans on Sunday.

Well, Clark got what he asked for!

Shinnecock Hills was eerily quiet on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The course was a lot more rowdy during the final round. Especially for the last group of the day, which featured Clark and Scottie Scheffler. The gallery finally looked like a gallery should look at a major championship.

Golf fans were actively rooting against Wyndham Clark.

Wyndham Clark carried a six-stroke lead into the final round of the U.S. Open. It was his tournament to lose.

However, Clark is known to be something of a mental midget and no lead is safe. All it takes is for one person to get hot— like Sam Burns.

And to make matters worse, Clark had to battle the increased crowd on Sunday in addition to his own internal demons and the course. His plea to fans completely backfired. They were actively rooting against him.

Fans on the grounds at Shinnecock Hills cheered Clark’s mistakes.

They groaned when he saved par.

His mistakes got a much louder pop than his successes.

Hecklers yelled “GET IN THE BUNKER” on his tee shots. The crowd was relentless.

It got to the point that local police officers were forced to step in and remove the most unruly spectators.

Clark asked for more fans. They showed up to cheer on his demise.
