Johnny Depp and his many hats are still not happy with his ex-wife of less than two years, Aquaman actress Amber Heard.
Depp, who married Heard on February 3, 2015 and was served divorce papers (and a temporary restraining order) in May of 2016, has been in a legal battle with the 33-year-old actress ever since she wrote an article for the Washington Post in 2018 claiming she had been a victim of domestic abuse.
Heard did not mention Depp by name, but that didn’t stop him from filing a $50 million defamation suit against her, claiming that her op-ed cost him a role in a planned Pirates of the Caribbean reboot and tarnished his reputation.
The latest salvo fired by Depp in the case is a claim that prior to a hearing in Virginia last week, Heard’s attorneys allegedly showed Depp’s legal team several incriminating photos, one of which reportedly appears to show Depp smoking drugs from a glass pipe, reports The Blast. Other photos allegedly showed illegal drugs and paraphernalia inside Depp’s home.
This claim comes on the heels of Heard filing a motion to have the $50 million defamation suit thrown out and Heard going to court in an attempt to get Depp to turn over documents related to his “drug and alcohol abuse” and “incidents of domestic violence and abuse,” according to Deadline.
“Mr. Depp cannot seek to litigate the truth of Ms. Heard’s allegations about his violent and abusive behavior while intoxicated, insist on proceeding without a protective order, and then blithely refuse to produce evidence that confirms the truth of those allegations on grounds of relevance and ‘privacy,'” wrote Heard’s lawyer.
The filing also stated, “In particular, Mr. Depp refuses to produce evidence about his drug and alcohol abuse, even though he purports to challenge statements by Ms. Heard that his substance abuse is inextricably intertwined with his patterns of violent conduct. Mr. Depp also refused to produce communications with his doctor about incidents of domestic violence and abuse. All of this evidence bears directly on Mr. Depp’s claims; it is certainly likely to lead to the discovery of evidence that explains shifts in Mr. Depp’s behavior over time, bears on Mr. Depp’s own memory of events at issue, identifies witnesses who observed Mr. Depp’s violence or helped cover it up, and provides critical context for Ms. Heard’s earlier statements (the truth of which is a complete defense to Mr. Depp’s frivolous claim).”
In Depp’s defense, his attorneys claimed in their own court filing, according to Radar, “Mr. Depp, whose reputation has suffered severe harm from these false claims, should have the right to the restorative transparency of the truth that Ms. Heard seeks to hide. Even as Ms. Heard and her representatives continue their onslaught of false and defamatory statements about Mr. Depp in the media, it is clear that Ms. Heard’s reaction to the avalanche of testimonial and other evidence Mr. Depp has produced is to seek to simply hide future discovery.”
What a mess.
The case is expected to go to trial at some point in the next few months.
