Another week is down in college football, getting us to the midway point of the 2023 season. A hypothetical BCS ranking has unveiled a new No. 1 team.

While the poll is no longer used to determine a national champion, it does give interesting perspective on how different ranking systems gauge the country’s top teams.

One social media account pumps out these BCS ratings week in and week out, and a surprising team has topped the most recent list.

Michigan is the new No. 1 after reeling off seven straight wins. The Wolverines have looked impressive throughout the ’23 campaign, beating each of their opponents by 24 points or more. They’ve managed to score 30 points or more in every matchup while also holding foes to 10 points or less.

UM’s most recent outing was maybe its most dominant, a 52-7 blowout of Indiana. That win was apparently good enough to move the Wolverines up the rankings.

It’s a change from last week’s standings, which saw two-time defending champion Georgia at the top. The Bulldogs have now fallen to No. 3 following a less than convincing 37-20 win over Vanderbilt.

Ohio State comes in at No. 2, setting up for a potential 1-2 rivalry matchup on the season’s final week.

A few other notes from the BCS rankings:

  • Florida State comes in at No. 4 after a blowout of Syracuse, one of 4 ACC teams in the poll
  • Washington is No. 5 after a thrilling win over Oregon, who fell to No. 11
  • Notre Dame is ahead of USC despite having two losses, thanks to a head-to-head win
  • The SEC leads the way with 6 ranked teams

We’ll see some movement in the Top 10 given next week’s matchup between No. 3 Ohio State and No. 6 Penn State, which is set to kick off at noon on Saturday.
