It appears a catfish prank lured San Francisco wide receiver Deebo Samuel into a beef with former NFL MVP Cam Newton. The unlikely turn of events likely ends the brief back-and-forth.

On Wednesday, Samuel called Newton out for calling his quarterback, Brock Purdy, a game manager.

“Cam Newton, stop texting my phone,” Samuel said. “You was a fan like two weeks ago, that’s mad crazy. You wanted me on your podcast after talking about my QB, which is funny to me.”

The passer quickly barked back, denying the alleged attempts to contact the receiver. He begged Samuel to drop the receipts on social media, to which he complied.

“Stop the cap, bro,” Newton replied. “I don’t got your number.”

Samuel’s response, showing a text exchange between him and who he thought was Newton, initially appeared to paint his counterpart as a liar. Unfortunately, it backfired miserably.

After seeing the supposed online interaction between Samuel and Newton go viral, it was revealed that the person on the other line was in fact, not Newton.

It seems a group of pranksters got ahold of Samuel’s phone number and impersonated the former NFL quarterback.

The discovery sparked an immediate response online.

Did Deebo just get trolled by a fake Cam Newton text?”
