While no official release date for Stranger Things 4 has been announced, it goes without saying that the show has easily become Netflix’s most popular series and will therefore be of the highest priority going forward.

That said, just because Netflix hasn’t dished on any Stranger Things 4 details does not mean that the series’ creators, Matt and Ross Duffer, aren’t already cooking up ideas for what will happen in the fourth season of the iconic nostalgia-soaked Netflix sci-fi.

Warning: major spoilers for Stranger Thing 3 will follow.

Perhaps more so than any of the prior two seasons, Stranger Things 3 laid some serious foundations for future seasons, as they not only expanded the cast of characters, but they introduced the threat of the Russians, killed off their leading hero — Chief Hopper — before teasing his return, and stripped Eleven of her powers.

And according to a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, the Duffer Brothers did all that groundwork for a reason.

On what to expect in Stranger Things 4:

“We don’t want to write ourselves in a corner so we try to have these early discussions with the writers just to make sure that we’re setting ourselves up to go in the right direction,” says Ross Duffer. “We don’t know a lot, but we do know a lot of the big broad strokes.

At the end of season two, we knew about Billy. We knew that the Russians were going to come in. We didn’t know the mall and stuff, but again, we know these big broad strokes. That’s sort of where we are in season four. We have the big broad strokes.

It’s just now about filling in those lines in the details. We’re pretty excited about where it’s potentially going to go. Again, like we said, it’s going to feel very different than this season. But I think that’s the right thing to do and I think it’ll be exciting.”

The Duffer Brothers also touched on that mysterious American that’s in Russian captivity, saying that a fourth season would “obviously” delve into that teaser:

“Assuming there’s a season 4, obviously the question of who that American is in that cell and then also what they’re doing with the Demogorgon, is a tease. That’s obviously going to play a huge role in a potential season four,” Ross Duffer told EW.

Despite not announcing an official release date, Netflix is already teasing Stranger Things 4 with a cryptic voice message from Murray Bauman that hints at the fate of everyone’s beloved Dad-boded police chief.
