Daniel Jones Reportedly Wasn’t Going Higher Than Pick 30, Per Adam Schefter, Which Makes Giants Look So Dumb

Adam Schefter denies Giants' GM Dave Gettleman's claim that Daniel Jones would have been selected in first round

Daniel Jones may end up being a great NFL quarterback one day. Hell, he may become the best NFL quarterback anyone has ever seen. But right now, in this very moment, there aren’t too many New York Giants fans who are thrilled with the team selecting him No. 6 overall in last week’s NFL Draft. Nothing against the guy, but he wasn’t exactly lighting up college football while playing for the Duke Blue Devils, and hadn’t been linked to the Giants with that pick in any mock drafts, with the G-Men instead favorites to take Dwayne Haskins — who sounds motivated for slipping to the NFC East division rival Washington Redskins.

While the reactions to the Giants selecting Daniel Jones are priceless, the team’s general manager, Dave Gettleman, tried easing the pain and defending the pick by claiming that he “knew for a fact,” that the quarterback wouldn’t have been available at No. 17 in the first round — which was where the team had another first-round pick.

Per SNY:

“I know for a fact there were two teams that would’ve taken Daniel Jones in front of 17,” Gettleman said. “I know that for a fact.”

SNY’s Ralph Vacchiano reported that both the Washington Redskins and Denver Broncos were interested in taking Jones and they may be the two teams Gettleman was referencing. The Broncos ultimately decided to trade out of the 10th overall pick and took Missouri QB Drew Lock in the second round. The Redskins selected Ohio State QB Dwayne Haskins at 15.

That may be what Gettleman’s trying to use to defend his choice of Daniel Jones, but, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, it’s all a bunch of BS, because, from what the analyst has heard, neither Denver nor Washington had any interest in taking Jones. In fact, there wasn’t a team other than the Giants who appeared to have a first-round grade on the former Duke player.

Yep, you read that right, Giants fans. According to Schefter, your team could have taken a better overall player at No. 6, still selected the player they took at No. 17, defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence, and then could have traded back into the first-round to get to No. 30 (as they did) to select Daniel Jones. In fact, considering the next QB wasn’t taken until No. 42 overall — the aforementioned Drew Lock to the Broncos — the Giants could have probably waited nearly 35 picks later to pick their future quarterback.

Obviously, everything leading up to and during the NFL Draft is a complete smokescreen, with teams trying to confuse one another and manipulate the system to their benefit. But, in this case, there’s a good chance that Daniel Jones was going to be waiting to hear his name for awhile, and Schefter’s report makes Dave Gettleman look clueless in what he’s trying to do with the iconic franchise.
